Chapter 19
Fiera’s Secret
Kailar sat by herself, as she had ever since their encounter with the bandits, and stared absently into the small fire she had made for herself. She marveled at it, even after close to four weeks of being on the road on Devor. When she would travel alone in and around Tal, she only occasionally made small fires during the day, to cook food or boil water. She never dared create a fire at night, for fear of attracting the attention of creatures or, worse yet, people. Now she had become accustomed to having a fire every night.
Most of Letan’s companions still tried to make her feel like a part of the group every day, and every single night they invited her to join them around their camp fire, but most nights she still refused.
She wasn’t one of them, and no amount of pretending could have ever made her believe otherwise. Their company on the road had become something she enjoyed, but she knew it would eventually come to an end, and that was coming sooner rather than later.

She hoped for that much. Despite everything that had happened to her, one thing remained the same. She wanted to regain her connection to magic, to regain her place in the world as a power to be reckoned with, to be able to once more effect change in the world.
However, some things had changed. Her time spent with Letan, getting to know him, growing close to him had awakened feelings within her that she had never felt before for anyone. Grudgingly she had learned to admit to herself that it scared her. He scared her. The fact that he still believed in her, even after she had threatened him, even after he had attacked the bandits, scared her.
She dreaded the coming of the morning, because she knew what was coming. Their time together was about to come to an end.
As such, it came as no surprise to her when Letan walked over to her small, lonely spot and asked to join her. She warmly accepted his company on the outside, but a knot twisted in her stomach.
They sat together for a long time in silence, both staring into her fire. She used a
